Become a High School Referee

You can become a soccer referee in Alabama through the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) or Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) certification—and make up to $80 per game. USSF referees officiate youth, and adult games, while AHSAA officials handle middle to high school matches. Many referees do both, and we offer comprehensive training and ongoing support. The soccer season lasts year-round, providing abundant opportunities to get involved and improve your officiating skills.

AHSAA Soccer Season Overview

The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) soccer season kicks off in early February each year and concludes with the state championships in May. Training for the season starts in December to ensure players and officials are well-prepared.

Certification for Officials

Before officiating games, all referees must pass a certification test and background check. This ensures they are up-to-date on the latest rules and ready to maintain the highest standards on the field.

STEP 1

Register on DragonFly, our platform for taking your test and tracking your assignments.

STEP 5

Email your assignor and let them know you have completed your steps and are ready for assignments.

STEP 2

Take your AHSAA test.

STEP 3

Buy your uniform. A Smitty Fluorescent Orange or Green Shirt, Black officiating shorts or long Black officiating pants, Black Fox 40 Whistle, Black stockings with White stripes under the knee., Predominately Black shoes with limited white markings and Black laces.

STEP 4

Set your blocks. Block the days you are unavailable.

STEP 6

Attend at minimum two preseason meetings. Dates are listed on our calendar.
